McCarthy Tétrault Alumni Newsletter
April 2025

A Message From Our CEO

Welcome to the McCarthy Tétrault Alumni newsletter. The vibrancy of our firm’s alumni network is extraordinary. You, our alumni, have achieved greatness in your careers and your communities. From holding top positions in the judiciary, to playing leadership roles in Canadian companies, to leading not-for-profit and pro bono initiatives – the value of the breadth of experience cannot be overstated. The relationships within this network enable connections, knowledge, and ideas to be exchanged amongst one another. This in turn drives opportunities and growth in the Canadian marketplace.

It is with immense pride that I stepped into the role of CEO on January 1, 2025. I have had the good fortune of calling this firm my home for the last 25 years. This firm is in my DNA, and I suspect many of you feel the same way. Regardless of what we do on a daily basis, we have all shaped our careers through interactions with incredible people. Our firm’s culture of excellence, collaboration, innovation, and inclusion has pushed McCarthy Tétrault to where it is today, and is what makes this alumni network so amazing.

In 2025, we are focused on a number of things, including refreshing our strategy. We are working on strengthening the journey our people take with McCarthy – from day one to the eventual transition to, and including, alumni. We want to drive more value for all of you, such that the ongoing connection to the firm is something you derive significant benefit from. Please stay tuned as we will keep you informed as this work progresses.

I look forward to seeing the McCarthy alumni community thrive, enhancing our connections with one another professionally and personally. I encourage you to tap into this network and engage with former colleagues regularly.

Thank you for being part of something so special.

What's New With Us?

Thank you Dave Leonard!

We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dave Leonard, whose second and final term as CEO of McCarthy Tétrault ended on December 31, 2024. Dave joined the firm in 1992 as an articling student and served many years as a litigator and partner before being elected CEO in April 2016.

He successfully guided the firm through the COVID-19 crisis. In 2021, Dave was named Managing Partner of the Year at the Canadian Law Awards.

Every day, Dave executed his vision for the future of our firm, leading with integrity, respect, and compassion. He remained focused on prioritizing our people, our clients, and our communities.

The Legacy of Gordon Shrum

Our founding firm in Vancouver was Shrum, Liddle and Hebenton. Unlike our founding firms in central Canada, our history in Vancouver is a little shorter, dating back to the 1960s. Shrum, Liddle and Hebenton grew rapidly, becoming one of Vancouver’s leading firms by the 1980s, merging with McCarthy & McCarthy in 1989-1990, and winning the SCC fight to create the first truly national firm. Gordon Shrum remained a daily part of our firm until well into the 2000s. Everyone who met Gordon will confirm that he was a wonderful conversationalist, witty and fun, with wide-ranging interests. He is described as wicked smart, fastidious, and someone who adhered to high standards in everything he did.

Gordon passed in 2018. He planned to leave the bulk of his estate to charity and did so through a donor-advised fund managed by the Aqueduct Foundation, through which he sought to make an impact in various areas: health, education, the environment, youth, and social services. In the years since 2018, his Fund has done just that.

Recently, a reception was held to celebrate Gordon’s legacy at the recently-finished Gordon B. Shrum Building at the University of British Columbia, which will house the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering.

We know you will all be inspired and impressed to know of Gordon’s incredible legacy, not just in the culture of excellence we continue to uphold at McCarthy Tétrault, but in his Fund’s contributions throughout our community.
