Sunil Kapur is CEO of McCarthy Tétrault. He leads our firm’s mission to deliver innovative and strategic solutions to clients across various industries, supported by our nationally integrated, multidisciplinary team of 800-plus advisors.

Every decision he makes is rooted in a commitment to excellence and a deep understanding of our clients’ business objectives. He oversees the firm’s strategic priorities including our focus on industries and strategic issues; providing seamless client service beyond Canada; growing and deepening our client relationships; innovating the way we work; and investing in our people.

He is committed to diversity and inclusion, building on our strong culture of collaboration and respect across our offices and within our communities.

Leading by example

Sunil has advised and represented employers in the sectors of financial services, manufacturing, transportation, education, health care, security, information technology, resources and public service. He has advised and represented those employers in labour board proceedings, arbitration, mediation, collective bargaining, employment litigation, judicial reviews, civil appeals and human rights. He has also advised numerous Fortune 500 companies on labour and employment matters arising from mergers and acquisitions. He regularly provides training for clients on a wide range of issues.

As the past National Practice Group Leader for the firm’s National Litigation Group, Sunil led approximately 300 lawyers across Canada practising in all areas of disputes, restructuring, international trade, intellectual property, environmental law, and employment law - leveraging multidisciplinary expertise to deliver client-focused solutions.

Sunil is a former part-time member of the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, and was a founding member of the Advisory Committee to the Ontario Labour Relations Board. 

Sunil is a regular speaker on labour, employment and human rights matters. He is a member of the business and employment sections of the American Bar Association, the Ontario and Canadian Bar Associations and the Canadian Association of Counsel to Employers. He is also co-author of "A Legal Guide to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005", published by Canada Law Book.

Sunil received his B.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1992. He received his LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1995.
