Joanna Nairn is a counsel in our Litigation Group in Toronto. She maintains a broad civil litigation practice, with an emphasis on appeals, professional liability, commercial disputes, and tort law. She has appeared before the Ontario Court of Appeal in more than a dozen actions, and has represented clients before all levels of court in Ontario.
Prior to joining McCarthy Tétrault, Joanna practiced at a Toronto litigation boutique, and for several years in a large multinational law firm in Washington, D.C. where she worked on large class actions, complex commercial disputes, and civil and criminal appeals. She was named a Rising Star in appellate law by Super Lawyers magazine in 2013 and 2014.
Joanna obtained her Honours BA (with high distinction) in Political Science from the University of Toronto in 2006. She received her JD (magna cum laude) from Harvard Law School in 2009. After graduating from law school, Joanna clerked for the Honourable Justice Morris J. Fish at the Supreme Court of Canada. While in school, she was the co-Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review, and won the 2006 World Universities Debating Championship.
Joanna was called to the Ontario bar in 2014. She was called to the bar in Massachusetts in 2010, and in Washington, D.C. in 2011. She is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Advocates' Society.
