Derek is an associate in our Business Law Group and Real Property & Planning Group in Calgary. He assists clients with a variety of matters related to the energy sector. His experience also includes assisting with general corporate and commercial matters such as asset transactions, project financing, real estate based financing transactions, commercial leasing, power regulation, and analyzing various commercial agreements.
Derek received his Juris Doctor from the University of Victoria (UVic). He volunteered with UVic’s Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) chapter for all three years of school, working on the Trans ID Clinic. He was awarded UVic PBSC’s 2021 Chief Justice Richard Wagner Award to recognize his work on the project. His time at UVic Law earned Derek a number of academic awards, including the Professor Jim Ellis Memorial Prize in International Business and Cook Roberts Scholarship in Business Associations. Upon graduation, Derek was awarded the Terry J. Wuester Graduation Award in Law, which is the award presented annually to the graduate who obtained the highest grades over the course of J.D. study at UVic Law.
Prior to entering law school, Derek attended the University of Calgary, where he received a BA (Political Science) and BSc (Ecology). He was awarded the Silver Medallion in Political Science upon graduation, recognizing the highest distinction in scholarship within his program. While attending the University of Calgary, Derek worked as the Opinions and Humour editor for the Gauntlet, the university’s student newspaper.
Derek was called to the Alberta bar in 2023 and is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Calgary Bar Association and the Canadian Bar Association.
