Heather Maki is an associate in our Litigation Group in Calgary. She maintains a broad litigation and dispute resolution practice centered on complex corporate and commercial litigation, Aboriginal law, public law, and class actions.

Heather regularly advises clients on issues relating to Aboriginal rights and title, treaty rights, consultation and accommodation and litigation risk management in relation to resource development, energy and infrastructure projects. She is Class Counsel for the First Nations Drinking Water Settlement, a historic class proceeding that resulted in an $8 billion settlement to address water infrastructure issues and long-term drinking water advisories on reserve.

Heather completed her J.D. at Thompson Rivers University. She was awarded the Law Society of British Columbia Gold Medal for obtaining the highest cumulative grade point average in her graduating year. She went on to clerk at the Supreme Court of British Columbia before returning to McCarthy Tétrault to complete her articles.

During law school, Heather won the Outstanding First Year Moot Prize and competed in the Wilson Moot in Toronto. She volunteered with Pro Bono Students Canada, providing legal research and writing for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council, and was a student clinician at the Community Legal Clinic. She also played on the women’s law rugby team, the Lawggers, and was the captain in her final year.

Prior to law school, Heather obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics, History, and Economics (with distinction) from the King’s University in Edmonton. Alongside her degree, she completed an internship program in Global Studies and Community Development and spent three years volunteering as a court mentor for female youth with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Edmonton.

Heather manages our involvement with the Civil Claims Duty Counsel Project and volunteers with the King’s Bench Court Assistance Program at the Calgary Courts Centre, which provide free legal assistance to unrepresented litigants.

In her free time, Heather enjoys backcountry snowboarding, mountain biking and learning new outdoor sports.
