Heather Maki completed her J.D. at Thompson Rivers University. She was awarded the Law Society of British Columbia Gold Medal for obtaining the highest cumulative grade point average in her graduating year. She went on to clerk at the Supreme Court of British Columbia before returning to McCarthy Tétrault to complete her articles.

During law school, Heather won the Outstanding First Year Moot Prize and competed in the Wilson Moot in Toronto. She volunteered with Pro Bono Students Canada, providing legal research and writing for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council, and was a student clinician at the Community Legal Clinic. She also played on the women’s law rugby team, the Lawggers, and was the captain in her final year.

Prior to law school, Heather obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics, History, and Economics (with distinction) from the King’s University in Edmonton. Alongside her degree, she completed an internship program in Global Studies and Community Development. She also spent three years volunteering as a court mentor for female youth with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Edmonton.

In her spare time, Heather enjoys snowboarding, mountain biking and learning new outdoor sports.
