An associate in the firm’s International Trade & Investment Law Group in Toronto, Gajan is known for his personable and practical approach to advising clients on a wide range of trade, regulatory, and compliance matters.

Through his international trade practice, Gajan advises multinational and domestic businesses on how Canada’s international trade agreements and laws related to trade with foreign countries may impact their business. Specifically, he has advised on customs issues, public procurement, treaty compliance and on market access concerns, including economic sanctions, export and import controls and trade remedies. He has also represented clients in front of the Canadian International Trade Tribunal, and has significant experience assisting companies in the retail and oil and gas sectors with issues related to anti-dumping duties and customs compliance.

Gajan’s regulatory practice is tailored to supporting clients at each stage of the regulatory continuum: from the earliest stages of product formulation and development, to packaging and labelling requirements, ensuring compliance with mandatory standards, obtaining requisite permits and licenses, and through to responding to regulatory enforcement actions. Gajan also has significant experience with the Investment Canada Act, advising clients on the regulatory landscape associated with entering and expanding within the Canadian marketplace.

Gajan also has experience with complex competition matters, and has advised on several landmark transactions as well as matters related to the application of competition law to business practices and initiatives, including matters related to potential abuses of dominance and false and misleading advertising claims, such as concerns related to greenwashing.

Gajan graduated from McGill Law in 2016 and was awarded the Philip F. Vineberg Q.C. Award for distinction in the fields of Corporate Law and Taxation. Prior to law school, Gajan graduated as valedictorian for his engineering class at the University of Waterloo and spent two years as a technology consultant for a global consulting firm. Prior to joining McCarthys, Gajan was an associate at a large national full-service law firm.

Gajan was called to the Ontario bar in 2017. He is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, Ontario Bar Association, Canadian Bar Association, and American Bar Association.
