Benjamin Lai is an associate in our Intellectual Property Group in Toronto. His practice focuses on the acquisition, commercialization, and enforcement of intellectual property rights.
As a registered Canadian patent agent, Benjamin has acted for clients in all aspects of the patent prosecution process including prior art searching, patentability analysis, drafting and responding to Patent Office communications. He has experience working on a wide range of technology applications including, embedded systems, programmable devices, image processing, medical devices, biomedical engineering, and data encryption hardware and software. On transactional matters, he has assisted clients in the medical device, pharmaceutical, and health product industries with Canadian regulatory issues relating to compliance, permits, and licensing for Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and Public Health Agency of Canada.
Benjamin completed his Bachelor of Applied Science (with Honours) in electrical engineering at the University of Toronto, which included a 14-month Professional Experience Year in California with a semiconductor company. He also obtained a Master of Science degree in the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto.
Before attending Osgoode Hall Law School, he was a research technician at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre working on the development of various cancer-related diagnostic and therapeutic tools.
Benjamin is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and the Law Society of Ontario (LSO). Mr. Lai is also fluent in Cantonese and conversational in Mandarin.
