On May 8th 2025, McCarthy Tétrault represented the successful applicant, the Canadian Retransmission Collective, in a judicial review of a redetermination decision made by the Copyright Board of Canada setting tariffs for the retransmission of distant television signals under the Copyright Act. The Federal Court of Appeal allowed the application and directed the Board to issue a new tariff at much higher rates, with the increased rates garnering an estimated economic impact of about $60 million plus interest for the tariff term, plus an increase of approximately $153 million in interim tariff payments for the years 2019 to 2024 (Copyright Collective of Canada v. Bell Canada, 2025 FCA 92).

Based in Toronto, Ontario, the Canadian Retransmission Collective (CRC) is an organization that guarantees television program retransmitters in Canada compensate copyright owners with royalties.

McCarthy Tétrault LLP advised the Canadian Retransmission Collective (CRC) with a team led by Daniel G.C. Glover that included Connor Bildfell and Grant Buchanan.
