Office Involved

McCarthy Tétrault represented the Canadian Association of Broadcasters ("CAB") in responding to an appeal to the Federal Court of Appeal by online streaming platforms against a CRTC decision. The decision requires foreign online streaming services with C$25 million or more in annual Canadian revenues to contribute 5% of that amount to specific funds, including one that supports news programming.

This matter is part of a broader series of appeals shaping Canada’s digital broadcasting regulatory framework. It addresses the jurisdictional reach of the CRTC over foreign-owned digital platforms and industry obligations for Canadian content funding. The parties include global streaming companies headquartered in the United States and Canada’s broadcasting regulator, with CAB representing the interests of Canadian broadcasters.

McCarthy Tétrault LLP advised the Canadian Association of Broadcasters with a team led by Steven Mason and Richard Lizius that included Brandon Kain and Stephanie Willsey.
