Our reputation is exceptional. So is our training.
Our strong programs will help you gain invaluable experience to build your career. Our summer program is designed to introduce students to the practice of law and to the firm’s variety of practice areas. Meanwhile our articling program provides a comprehensive introduction to the firm and will build on the skills you have learned, to ensure a well-rounded articling experience.
Our summer program is designed to introduce you to the practice of law and to the firm's various areas of practice. As a summer student, you will have the opportunity to work with Canada's leading lawyers in business law, tax, litigation, real property law, and labour and employment law. From the first day you arrive, you will be treated as a professional and as part of our team.
The articling program is designed to maximize your exposure to all aspects of the practice of law and our law firm. It will provide you with the opportunity to experience our practice first-hand by conducting research, attending client meetings, strategy sessions, hearings and trials. You will be encouraged to work independently on some matters, all the while having support and guidance.
In Vancouver, our summer students work closely with lawyers and feedback occurs informally on a regular basis. In addition, you will receive a mid-summer and final review.
Articling students are encouraged to discuss any aspect of their articles with their principals and other lawyers in the firm. There are at least two members of our student committee in each practice group to provide assistance and discuss work-related matters with our students at any time. In addition, there are two reviews for each articling rotation so students can receive constructive feedback on their professional development and tell us whether the firm is providing them with work and experience consistent with their expectations. Student workloads and the variety of each student's assignments are monitored by the Professional Resources team and the Student Committee.
In addition to the professional aspects of the summer and articling program, a variety of social events are planned throughout the year to round out your experience as a McCarthy Tétrault student. We also actively organize a variety of social and athletic activities involving our legal and support staff and their spouses and families. We annually have teams participating in a variety of athletic and social events including the ‘Run for the Cure'.
The legal training and practical experience of our lawyers enables them to make valuable contributions to the community. We regularly participate in conferences and teach law school courses, the Professional Legal Training Course, and continuing legal education courses. McCarthy Tétrault also sponsors scholarships, competitive moots, and academic prizes.
As a student at McCarthy Tétrault, you will receive a compensation package that is competitive with other large national law firms.
For articling students, we pay the Law Society admission fees and Professional Legal Training Course tuition fees for all students. In addition to a basic salary, articling students will receive medical and dental benefits, two weeks’ paid vacation (during the articling term) and a fitness subsidy. Salary is paid during PLTC. Summer students also receive a fitness subsidy, paid vacation and a third year tuition allowance.
We encourage our articling students to attend continuing legal education courses and other seminars. All articling students are provided with a membership in the Canadian Bar Association.
