Charlene Theodore and Safia Thompson Named 2024 Viola Desmond Award Recipients

McCarthy Tétrault Chief Inclusion Officer, Charlene Theodore, and Litigation associate, Safia Thompson, have been named 2024 recipients of the prestigious Viola Desmond Award, presented by Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). This distinguished award honours Black women and Black gender-diverse leaders whose actions, courage and dedication mirror the legacy of Viola Desmond, a pioneer in civil rights and equity.

Charlene’s many achievements within the firm, the legal profession, and our broader communities exemplify her career-long commitment and reputation as a guiding force for inclusion and social justice. She was the first Black president of the Ontario Bar Association and 10th woman to hold Office. Her work designing and implementing initiatives for law firms and corporate Canada introduced businesses nationwide to an inclusive, productive, profitable and diverse path forward. This is the first year that the award has been bestowed on an individual who is not an alum or member of the TMU community.

Safia is a graduate of TMU’s Lincoln Alexander School of Law and its inaugural valedictorian. Already the recipient of multiple recognitions for her exceptional achievements and advocacy work addressing critical issues affecting the Black community and beyond, she is an up-and-coming leader to watch. Notably, Safia was recognized nationally by Canada International Black Women Excellence (CIBWE) as one of Canada’s Top 100 Black Women to Watch in 2023, highlighting her dedicated leadership, excellence, and national influence.

“Charlene’s and Safia’s dedication to equity aligns closely with the spirit of the Viola Desmond Award, celebrating individuals advancing education, diversity, and community engagement. They are true, bold champions, committed to positive change and inspiring others,” said Barbara J. Boake, National People and Practice Leader, McCarthy Tétrault. “We are honoured to celebrate this moment with Charlene and Safia.”
