Rauf came to Canada at the age of 20 from Azerbaijan. He entered the University of Toronto with the Maytree Scholarship, awarded to protected persons on the basis of a sense of civic responsibility combined with a successful academic, work and volunteer record. He graduated with his Honours Bachelor of Arts from Victoria College.

Rauf entered Osgoode Hall with the Patrick Monahan Award. While at Osgoode, he has received the Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement. Rauf has also been awarded the Harry R. Rose Criminal Law Prize for obtaining the highest standing in first year criminal law. He recently completed a judicial externship with ten judges of the Ontario Court of Justice at Old City Hall.

Rauf has previously worked as a researcher and case worker at FCJ Refugee Centre, where he conducted research for the co-founders of the organization and assisted vulnerable clients with all aspects of settlement. He was entrusted with studying and reporting on the refugee protection systems of the United States and Sweden for the Government of Canada on behalf of FCJ and the Canadian Council for Refugees. Rauf has also interned at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), where he provided support to the Executive Director in substantive research projects, and the Mosaic Institute, where he edited the Institute’s China-Tibet Report.

In Azerbaijan, Rauf attended medical school and music school for piano and vocal performance. He has performed before world leaders and at venues such as the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) headquarters in Paris.

Rauf is a member of OUTLaws, Osgoode’s LGBTQ student group. Last year, he was a section leader at Osgoode’s Orientation Week for incoming students. In addition to English, Rauf also speaks Azerbaijani, Russian and Turkish. He enjoys travelling and hiking.
