On June 30, 2004, in a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are not required by copyright legislation to pay royalties to the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) for music downloaded by their users.
