Vincent Kam-Sun Yip* is a partner in the Business Law Group and the national Intellectual Property Group. Based in Vancouver, he leads the firm’s Western Canadian intellectual property practice and has a national practice, working closely with clients of the Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal offices.

Vincent’s practice focuses on the global acquisition, commercialization, and enforcement of intellectual property rights, including drafting and prosecuting patent and trademark applications, managing trademark oppositions, rendering patentability, validity, freedom-to-operate, and infringement opinions, and resolving intellectual property rights disputes. Vincent provides clients with strategic and practical advice in the management of global patent, trademark, and industrial design portfolios.

As a patent and trademark lawyer with substantial corporate and commercial expertise, Vincent provides intellectual property advice on complex corporate and commercial transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, and financing transactions.

• Acquisition of McCloskey International by Metso Corporation for C$420M
• US$908 million debt financing of Dentalcorp Health Services ULC

• Acquisition of TetraGenx by Tropichem Research Labs, LLC.

Vincent regularly advises life sciences and pharmaceutical companies on complex licensing and collaboration arrangements. Vincent also has significant experience providing intellectual property advice to companies in the cannabis sector. Vincent’s client base further includes companies in the oil-and-gas, energy, transportation, retail, healthcare, hospitality, gaming, and technology sectors.

Vincent is a frequent speaker on intellectual property topics for organizations such as the Canadian Bar Association and the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia. Vincent is the chair of the Canadian Bar Association National Intellectual Property Section. Vincent obtained his B.Sc. (Honours) in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of British Columbia in 2004 and his LLB from the University of British Columbia. He was called to the British Columbia bar. Vincent is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Law Society of British Columbia, and an affiliate member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.
