Tanner obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Victoria, where she also completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with Distinction in Political Science. 

At the University of Victoria, Tanner volunteered with Legal Aid BC through Pro Bono Students Canada, worked alongside Amici Curiae (Friends of Court) and acted as a teaching assistant for the first-year Legal Research and Writing course. Tanner also served as a member of the Editorial Board for the University of Victoria’s law journal, Appeal: Review of Current Law and Law Reform and as a student clinician with the UVic Business Law Clinic. Prior to her second year, Tanner completed a work term with the BC Ministry of Attorney General in the Justice Services Branch.

Throughout law school, Tanner received several awards for her academic performance and advocacy, including the Cook Roberts Scholarship in Civil Procedure, the G. Allan Higenbottam Prize in Legal and Legislative Drafting, the Lawson Lundell LLP Prize in Secured Transactions, and the Blakes LLP Legal Research and Writing Prize. In her final year, Tanner competed at the Wilson Moot competition where her team placed third and she received the Peter W. Hogg Award for Top Oralist.

In her spare time, Tanner enjoys cycling, trying new recipes and tracking down the best coffee in Vancouver.
