Stephen Darroch appointed a Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice

Toronto, August 11, 2021 — McCarthy Tétrault is happy to share the Ontario Attorney General’s recent announcement that Stephen Darroch will be appointed a Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice as of August 26, 2021. Chief Justice Lise Maisonneuve has assigned Justice Darroch to London.
“Though Stephen joined our firm relatively recently, he has left an impressive mark on our Litigation group with his dedicated service to our clients, his kindness, collegiality, and unique perspective on the law,” said Caroline Zayid, National Litigation Practice Group Leader. “Where individuals have benefited from Stephen’s wise and skilled counsel, now the people of Ontario will benefit from his thoughtfulness and experience. We’re delighted to see Stephen accept this great honour and responsibility.”
At McCarthy Tétrault, Stephen has acted as counsel to physicians - defending criminal matters at trial courts throughout Ontario. Before joining the firm in 2017, he maintained a criminal defence practice, conducting over 250 contested trials, including attempted murder, major fraud and serious assaults. He has also appeared before the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, the Health Professional Appeal and Review Board and the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.
Justice Darroch is also a teacher and volunteer. He regularly instructs at the annual Osgoode Hall Intensive Trial Advocacy Workshop and mentors and coaches students at the Ontario Bar Association annual law day student competition. As a volunteer, Justice Darroch supports Pro Bono Ontario and the Unaccompanied Minors Project, representing children arriving in Canada without a legal guardian.
He received his BA from the University of Western Ontario in 1995 and a diploma of Honours Standing from the University of Western Ontario in 1997. Justice Darroch received his LLB from the University of Ottawa in 2000.
