Shawn Doyle, the leader of our Latin America Practice, joined lawyers from Galicia Abogados and other guests in Mexico City to discuss recent legal and political developments in Mexico and how they affect mining companies. They discussed: Mexico’s current ban on new mining concessions and its impact on exploration activity in the country; proposals for constitutional reform, which could lead to the nationalization of large parts of the industry; trends in environmental permitting; Mexico’s new labour laws, which bar mining companies from subcontracting many activities; and Mexican electoral politics.
