For years, Bolivia’s lithium industry was little more than unrealized potential, and its state-led approach was dismissed by critics as ineffectual. Now, however, we are beginning to see interesting developments, with an important public-private partnership having recently been signed and more on the way. In addition, Bolivia’s sovereign approach to developing its lithium resource has recently been imitated by Mexico and Chile. Bolivia also has ambitions to develop its exploitation of other key battery metals. However, many political and legal risks remain. On April 24, the leader of our Latin America Practice, Shawn Doyle, led a panel discussion in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, with lawyers from leading Bolivian firm, PPO, to explore how the battery minerals business may develop in Bolivia in the coming months and years.
