Toronto, August 13, 2012 — McCarthy Tétrault is delighted to announce that Canada Law Book has published A Legal Guide to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 , by lawyers Sunil Kapur and Kate McNeill-Keller. This convenient, helpful resource outlines and clarifies the AODA’s complexities and obligations, and discusses the Act’s goals of equality and full participation in Ontario by persons with disabilities.

Describing the interplay between existing and new accessibility standards, rights and obligations previously recognized through the enforcement of other legislation, such as the Human Rights Code (Ontario) , the guide is useful to employers, service providers, human resource professionals, lawyers, consultants and others involved in ensuring accessibility in businesses in Ontario or to others seeking enriched insight on the AODA. The guide will be updated regularly via loose-leaf insert so that readers have access to current information about compliance issues.

The guide covers the following topics in this developing area of law, using a clear, understandable format:

  • Overview of accessibility issues in Ontario
  • The standards development process
  • Standards for Customer Service, Accessible-Built Environments, Transportation, Information and Communications, and Employment
  • Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation
  • Act Administration
  • Compliance
  • Lessons from other jurisdictions
