Comment Period is Open for Proposed Federal Pay Equity Regulations

The Minister of Labour, Filomena Tassi, announced that the Government of Canada’s proposed Pay Equity Regulations are now available. The proposed Pay Equity Regulations aim to support the implementation of the Pay Equity Act.

All interested parties can review the proposed Pay Equity Regulations as the Government of Canada is providing an extended comment period of 60 days, ending on January 13, 2021. Following the consultation period, the regulations will be finalized. The Government of Canada sets out that it “will look to a potential coming into force date of the Pay Equity Act and the accompanying regulations later in 2021. Once in force, employers will have three years to develop and implement their proactive pay equity plans.”

The Pay Equity Act was introduced as part of Bill C-86, the Budget Implementation Act, 2018, No. 2, which received Royal Assent in December 2018. Once the legislation is in force, it will seek to ensure that women and men in federally regulated workplaces receive equal pay for work of equal value.
