Appeals Court Denies Rehearing Request in i4i v. Microsoft

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit denied Microsoft’s petition for a full panel of judges to rehear its appeal in its patent dispute with i4i LP. Previously, a jury found that Microsoft had wilfully infringed i4i’s patent relating to XML editing software by including a custom XML editing tool in certain versions of Microsoft Word. The judge allowed the jury verdict, granted i4i’s motion for a permanent injunction and awarded i4i $290 million US for damages, enhanced damages, and interest. At the appeal, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld the decision, prompting Microsoft’s petition to the Court of Appeals for a rehearing.
