Susan Nickerson Joins McCarthy Tétrault as Head of its Pensions, Benefits & Executive Compensation Group

To help our clients address the evolving complexity of their pensions, benefits and executive compensation matters, McCarthy Tétrault welcomes Susan Nickerson as a partner and the new Head of our Pensions, Benefits, & Executive Compensation Group in Toronto.

Susan is a well-known and respected senior member of the Canadian Pension and Benefits bar, acting as a trusted advisor to clients on all areas of pensions and benefits law and governance. In her leadership role, Susan will drive the Group’s strategic direction and offer our clients unique and powerful insights into the sector across a range of industries and complementary areas of law.

Susan’s expertise spans fiduciary duties and risk management, plan conversion, and funding, to implementation of new plan designs. She has particular experience in corporate transactions, restructurings, and insolvencies, giving her the knowledge to advise clients engaged in large M&A transactions and bet-the-farm deals. Susan also brings a nuanced and practical perspective to pension plan governance structures and systems, providing her clients with a strong vision for long-term success.

As past Chair of the Association of Canadian Pension Management and past Chair of its National Policy Committee, Susan has established herself as a sector leader. She is a prolific author and contributor to key industry policy white papers and speaks regularly at conferences and industry events. Her position as an authority on pensions and benefits means she consults closely with lawmakers across Canada on pension reform and guidance, giving clients who work with her access to timely and practical advice.

“Our Pensions, Benefits, & Executive Compensation Group has some of Canada’s leading advisors and experts in the sector,” said Éric Gosselin, Partner and Head of the firm’s Business Law practice. “Having Susan join us to lead this exceptional group of professionals will give our clients unparalleled access to legal talent and top-tier service that draws on Susan’s unique expertise and policy-shaping perspective on the sector.”
