In Memoriam: Jean-Pierre Bertrand (1959–2019)
Montréal, January 7, 2019 — We deeply regret to announce the passing of McCarthy Tétrault partner Jean-Pierre Bertrand at the age of 59 on January 5, 2019 in Montréal. Jean-Pierre is survived by his loving wife Kate and their three sons, Nicolas, Jean-Philippe and Mathieu. We wish to extend our sincerest and deepest condolences to his family.
“For many of us, Jean-Pierre was a mentor we could count on and a friend we could rely on,” said Dave Leonard, CEO. “Like the elite athlete he was, Jean-Pierre knew how to instill a strong work ethic in his team, encouraging them to always aim for excellence. He was a good man: loyal, brave, and exceptionally devoted to his family.”
A multitalented lawyer, Jean-Pierre distinguished himself through the leadership he displayed in important roles at the firm: partner, member of the National Leadership Team, National Practice Group Leader for litigation, and the firm’s first-ever Senior Director, Client Service Innovation. His significant contributions to McCarthy Tétrault’s development and to the firm’s innovative approaches to legal project management and pricing are greatly appreciated.
As National Practice Group Leader for litigation, Jean-Pierre led over 240 lawyers and paralegals practising across Canada while maintaining an extensive commercial litigation practice, representing numerous Canadian and U.S. financial institutions. He also worked on administrative matters and had extensive experience representing doctors before their professional order and governmental organizations.
Jean-Pierre left an indelible mark on McCarthy Tétrault through both his immense talent and his drive to maintain the firm’s position at the head of the pack. We pay tribute to his memory with sadness and pride.
A service will be held at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex on Friday, January 11 at 11 am. Reception will follow.
