McCarthy Tétrault Reinforces Construction Expertise with New Partner Bruce Karn
September 11, 2023 – McCarthy Tétrault welcomes partner Bruce Karn to our Business Law and Construction Groups in Toronto. With extensive industry expertise, Bruce will advise key stakeholders, including owners and developers, on some of Canada’s largest and most complex construction projects.
Bruce will be working with clients from a range of industries including green power generation (including nuclear and renewables), industrial, commercial and institutional construction. Having acted on multi-million and multi-billion projects in the residential and commercial real estate, transportation, rail and LRT, manufacturing, industrial, technology, power, health care and education sectors, Bruce has an acute understanding of how to navigate the manifest construction risks that projects often face. With in-house experience as a senior legal advisor at one of Canada’s largest construction firms, Bruce's experience on the supplier side will provide our clients with unique insight into contractors’ perceptions of key project risks and help identify and resolve issues early.
“Major project developments are long and complicated matters that require a legal team that knows your project and business as well as the different stakeholders,” says Éric Gosselin, partner and National Practice Group Leader of McCarthy Tétrault’s Business Law Group. “Bruce’s in-depth knowledge on all the moving parts of projects combined with his in-house background at one of Canada’s largest construction firms will be invaluable to our clients.”
Bruce’s background in both disputes and transactions uniquely positions him to provide clients with comprehensive advice on contract negotiation and risk mitigation. He guides clients through all aspects of projects, from inception and selection of contracting strategy, to drafting and negotiating construction and ancillary contracts, to advising them through contract administration. With more than a decade of experience on both sides of the negotiation table, Bruce excels at negotiating and securing the best possible outcomes for clients.
“Each year, major project developments become larger and more ambitious, with commensurate increases in demands on technology, supply chains, and sustainability driving a constant need for innovation and efficiency,” says Scott Chalmers, Partner and Leader of McCarthy Tétrault’s National Construction Group. “As the quantity and scale of Canadian construction projects continues to soar, having Bruce join the transactional side of our multi-disciplinary Construction Group will allow us to continue offering clients top tier advice on their projects from inception to completion and beyond.”
