McCarthy Tétrault General Counsel Malcolm Mercer wins CBA 2013 Louis St. Laurent Award
Toronto, August 19, 2013 — McCarthy Tétrault is delighted to announce that its General Counsel Malcolm Mercer has received the Canadian Bar Association’s (CBA) 2013 Louis St. Laurent Award of Excellence. The award recognizes distinguished and exceptional service to the goals and objectives of the CBA, and is named in memory of Louis St-Laurent, a former Prime Minister of Canada and CBA President.
Mr. Mercer has been an outstanding contributor to the CBA since he joined it in 1984. He was an influential member on the CBA Conflicts of Interest Task Force and a key contributor the writing of the 2008 report that focused on lawyers’ duties of loyalty and confidentiality to clients. He sits on the CBA Ethics and Professional Responsibility Committee, which he joined in 2009; he became Vice-Chair in 2010 and has been the committee’s Chair since 2011. Most recently, Mr. Mercer has served as the head of the CBA Legal Futures Initiative team examining regulatory and ethics issues.

Mr. Mercer has practised as a civil litigator with McCarthy Tétrault since 1984 and a partner since 1990. Since 2007, Mr. Mercer has acted as General Counsel to the firm, advising on legal ethics, conflicts and other professional matters. He has litigated numerous types of cases at all levels of court and before a number of tribunals, including in the defense of physicians in medical regulatory and negligence matters, professional negligence cases for and against lawyers, significant real estate and construction matters, complex insolvency litigation, estates litigation, commercial confidentiality and other commercial litigation.
