McCarthy Tétrault congratulates Richard Drouin on 60 years at the Bar

Québec City and Montréal, September 7, 2017 — McCarthy Tétrault is proud to announce that Richard Drouin, counsel in the firm’s Business Law Group, is celebrating the 60th anniversary of his call to the Bar. On September 8th, Mr. Drouin will be awarded the Québec Bar’s Médaille du Conseil to highlight this exceptional milestone at the Cérémonie de la Rentrée judiciaire.

“Known for his talents as a corporate director and negotiator, Mr. Drouin has been, in all respects, one of the leading lights of our business and legal communities,” said Karl Tabbakh, Managing Partner, Quebec Region. “His passion for law, his integrity and his leadership are just some of the qualities that have enabled him to have a career marked by great achievements in both the business and human spheres. The impressive number of social and humanitarian causes that he has supported are an eloquent testament to his social engagement.”

After his call to the Bar in 1957, Richard Drouin quickly made a name for himself by gaining expertise in labour relations and becoming very involved in the practice of energy law in Canada and abroad. Throughout his long and fruitful career, Mr. Drouin has excelled in roles as a lawyer at McCarthy Tétrault, Chairman and CEO of Hydro-Québec (from 1988 to 1995) and a director of large corporations.

Companion of the Order of Canada and Officer of Ordre national du Québec, Mr. Drouin was named 2002 Energy Person of the Year by the Energy Council of Canada. He was also named 2010 director emeritus at the Excellence en Gouvernance d'Entreprise Korn/Ferry — Les Affaires gala for his directorship roles and for the wide variety of boards of directors on which he has served over the course of his career. Richard Drouin is also a recipient of Université Laval’s Gloire de l’Escolle medal and holds an honorary degree from the Université Lumière in Lyon, France. In 2011, he was awarded the title of Advocatus Emeritus by the Québec Bar in recognition of his exemplary career.

Richard Drouin is from a family of distinguished lawyers for four generations. He is the great-grandson of François-Xavier Drouin, who founded the firm Drouin et Associés in Québec City in 1872. This firm later became McCarthy Tétrault’s Québec City office.
