McCarthy Tétrault congratulates Malcolm Mercer on being listed among Canada’s top 25 most influential lawyers

Toronto, August 5, 2014 — McCarthy Tétrault is pleased to announce that Malcolm Mercer, the firm’s General Counsel and partner in its Litigation Group, was recognized by Canadian Lawyer as one of Canada’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers. Now in its fifth year, the list focuses on identifying Canadian lawyers who have been influential within the legal profession and society during the last 18 months

As noted by Canadian Lawyer, inclusion in this year’s list speaks to "a level of respect, the ability to influence public opinion, and help shape the laws of this country and others." More than 100 nominations were submitted and panellists concluded that, "Malcolm is a leader and an innovator who is deeply concerned about the future of the legal profession."

Mr. Mercer is recognized for leading the charge in alternative business structures in the legal profession and as an outstanding contributor to his community. During his 30 years of practise, he has litigated cases at all levels of court and before various tribunals. Mr. Mercer is a leader of a Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC) working group that has developed proposals that would allow non-lawyers ownership of law firms. He is an LSUC bencher, chairman of the Canadian Bar Association’s ethics and professional responsibility committee, and a member of their task force on conflicts of interest.

The firm, and Mr. Mercer, congratulate the other lawyers who have been recognized with this distinguished honour.
