McCarthy Tétrault announces publication of communication lawyer Peter Grant’s personal memoir

Toronto, November 14, 2013 — McCarthy Tétrault is pleased to announce the publication of Changing Channels: Confessions of a Canadian Communications Lawyer by Peter S. Grant, counsel of the firm, and past chair of its Technology, Communications and Intellectual Property Group in Toronto. Mr. Grant’s memoir is published by The Porcupine’s Quill.

Mr. Grant, who has practised law with McCarthy Tétrault for some 45 years, has pioneered the field of communications law in Canada. In his memoir, he gives an insider’s glimpse into some of the biggest changes in the history of Canadian communications and cultural policy. Along with fond recollections of his hometown of Kapuskasing and anecdotes from his personal life, Mr. Grant documents his role in bringing competition to the telecom carriers, acting for broadcast programming services in front of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), acting as the broadcasting arbitrator in federal elections, and helping the underdog in Canada’s David-and-Goliath struggle to give space and choice to its creative sector, including book and magazine publishing, and music, film and television production.

The book also includes the story of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity, an international treaty that Mr. Grant first proposed in 1998. The treaty was subsequently approved by UNESCO in 2004 and has since been ratified by 128 countries.

Mr. Grant is the author of numerous articles and publications, including (with co-author Chris Wood) Blockbusters and Trade Wars: Popular Culture in a Globalized World. He is an adjunct professor at both the University of Toronto and York University.

The release of Changing Channels is being celebrated at two receptions hosted by The Porcupine’s Quill: one today at the offices of McCarthy Tétrault in Toronto and the other on November 18 at the Ottawa Convention Centre.

Changing Channels can be purchased from the publisher’s website at The e-book version is available at
