David E. Platts, McCarthy Tétrault’s Chief Inclusion Officer, Appointed to the Superior Court of Quebec
Montréal, April 9, 2018 – McCarthy Tétrault is proud to announce that David E. Platts, Partner and Chief Inclusion Officer, has been appointed Justice of the Superior Court of Quebec. The appointment, announced by the Government of Canada, falls under the new judicial application process implemented in fall 2016, which emphasizes transparency, merit and diversity to ensure the appointment of jurists who meet the highest standards of excellence and integrity.
“It has been a great privilege to have David on our team over the last 22 years. Not only was he a litigator with an innate talent, he also served as a mentor, confidant and coach to an entire generation of associates, many of whom are now our partners,” says Caroline Zayid, Partner and Litigation National Practice Group Leader. “With his conviction that the best ideas are born in an inclusive environment, David shined in his role as Chief Inclusion Officer. Through his significant involvement with the people of our firm and the wider community, he has made a lasting impression on McCarthy Tétrault and its culture.”
David’s practice as a partner in the Litigation Group focused on a variety of civil and administrative law matters. He has considerable experience defending medical malpractice, professional negligence and disciplinary cases. David will have appeared, up to his appointment, in more than 70 trials, with 20 courts of appeal cases, including some at the Supreme Court of Canada. He has been listed in The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as a leading lawyer in medical negligence–representing the defendant, as well as in the Best Lawyers of Canada directory.
A long-standing member of McCarthy Tétrault’s National Diversity Committee, he was appointed Chief Inclusion Officer in January 2017 and was President, from 2012 to 2017, of GRIS-Montréal, Québec’s largest volunteer organization, whose mission is to demystify homosexuality and bisexuality in schools and with seniors.
David obtained his Bachelor of Arts (with distinctions) from the University of Calgary and attended law school at McGill University. He was called to the Quebec Bar in 1991. He served as a law clerk to Mr. Justice Cory at the Supreme Court of Canada in 1989.
