“During my summer at the firm, I had the opportunity to work on a private-placement financing deal with a local technology start-up. It was interesting to learn about a new industry while working on the file. The partner included me in interactions with the client throughout the entire process – from the beginning all the way to a successful closing.”

Our summer program is designed to introduce you to the practice of law and to the firm's various areas of practice. As a summer student, you will have the opportunity to work with Canada's leading lawyers in business law, tax, litigation, real property law, and labour and employment law. From the day you arrive, you will be treated as a professional and as part of our team.
Our summer program begins with a week of orientation and training to introduce you to the firm, as well as research and writing techniques. In addition, we offer continuing legal education and professional development programs.
Summer students are given a broad range of responsibilities, including attending meetings, hearing and other litigation processes, researching and drafting legal memos, preparing draft documents, due diligence and work relating to the closing of transactions, participating in the drafting of conference materials, articles for publication, and case summaries. It is important that you have a well-rounded experience during what is often your first exposure to the practice of law.
In Calgary, we don't have a formal rotation program for summer students; this provides students with exposure to the areas of law that are of most interest to them. We believe that you should have direct contact with lawyers at all levels of the firm, so lawyers allocate work directly to students. Summer students are assigned two mentors from different practice areas. Our mentors also collaborate with the Director, Professional Ressources to ensure that students receive ongoing performance feedback. Members of our Student Program team monitor the flow of work to each student..
We encourage independence and initiative in our students. Your mentors will offer professional guidance throughout the summer and be responsible for ensuring that you receive interesting and stimulating work.
Students have had the opportunity to work on a number of assignments in various fields, including:
