Montréal, September 6, 2017 – Daniel Johnson, counsel at McCarthy Tétrault and former Premier of the Province of Quebec, recently reached a significant milestone in his legal career: 2017 marks his 50th anniversary of being called to the Bar. The Bar of Montreal will honour Mr. Johnson and other members celebrating their 50th, 60th and 70th anniversaries during the Ceremony of the Journée du Barreau on September 7, 2017.

“Mr. Johnson brings a very high level of strategic and diplomatic experience and invaluable knowledge to our practice group and our firm,” says Karl Tabbakh, Managing Partner for the Quebec Region. “He uses his unique skills to serve our clients without compromise, just as he served the public for 17 years.”

Mr. Johnson acts mainly as a strategic advisor on public law and government relations. He also acts as a mediator in disputes between private parties, particularly regarding public-private partnerships, public policy and government relations.

Prior to joining McCarthy Tétrault in 1998, Mr. Johnson held numerous offices in the Government of Quebec and the Quebec Liberal Party, such as Minister of Industry and Commerce, Chairman of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for Administration and the Public Service. Mr. Johnson was elected Leader of the Quebec Liberal Party in December 1993 and served as Premier of the Province of Quebec from January to September 1994 and then as Leader of the Official Opposition until May 1998.

Appointed Grand Officer of the Ordre national du Québec in 2008, the Government of Quebec’s highest honour, Mr. Johnson is a law graduate of the Université de Montréal. He also holds LLM and PhD degrees in law from the University of London, and an MBA from Harvard University.
