Toronto, May 9, 2014 — McCarthy Tétrault is pleased to announce that the Association of Women in Finance (AWF) named partner Miranda Lam as a Rising Star at its 17th annual PEAK awards gala last night. The awards are in recognition of outstanding contributions and excellence by women in the field of finance.

Ms. Lam’s practice focuses on commercial and business litigation, including contractual claims, securities litigation, shareholder remedies, corporate governance issues, and class action defence. She is ranked in the 2014 edition of Benchmark Canada: The Definitive Guide to Canada’s Leading Litigation Firms & Attorneys as a future star in the field of general commercial litigation and was recognized as one of Business in Vancouver’s 2013 "Forty Under 40". She has contributed to a number of legal publications and is a frequent speaker on governance issues, shareholder disputes and dispute resolution processes, as well as diversity and leadership. Ms. Lam serves on the boards of the United Way of the Lower Mainland and the Vancouver Foundation, and is the past chair of the board of directors of the University of British Columbia Alumni Association.

McCarthy Tétrault is also delighted that two of its clients were honoured:

  • Virginia Weiler, chair of Vancity’s board of directors, was awarded in the Community Legacy category. Ms. Weiler was first elected to the Vancity board in 2007 and was elected chair in 2011. Virginia’s connection to Vancity began in 1995 when she sold Vancity a micro-loan fund that focused on youth, new immigrant and women entrepreneurs. Micro-lending provides credit and peer support for people starting businesses, no matter how small. Virginia also helped design Vancity Capital to offer flexible financing to small- and medium-sized businesses. At Ecotrust Canada, she created a loan fund to finance small businesses in coastal B.C. communities where local economies are dependent on natural resources.
  • Sandra Stuart, COO of HSBC Bank Canada, received the award for Excellence in the Private Sector. Ms. Stuart joined HSBC in 1980 and she has had numerous roles in the organization in Vancouver and Toronto. Ms. Stuart was appointed COO of HSBC Bank Canada in December 2010. She is an executive director of HSBC Bank Canada and HSBC Finance Company, and the national chair of HSBC's Diversity and Inclusion Council. Ms. Stuart is a member of UBC's Sauder School of Business Faculty Advisory Board, and the 2012 Cabinet for the United Way of the Lower Mainland.

The Association of Women in Finance supports the advancement of professional women working in the field of finance. Its annual PEAK award winners are determined by an independent judging panel from the local finance community. Further information is found on the AWF’s website.
