McCarthy Tétrault hosts inaugural class action student moot
Toronto, March 10, 2014 — McCarthy Tétrault LLP is pleased to have hosted the inaugural Warren K. Winkler Class Actions Moot at its Toronto office on March 8, 2014. The tournament brought together teams from McGill University, the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School to debate a certification motion featuring current issues in Canadian class actions law. This Moot is the first edition of what will be an annual opportunity for top students from Canadian law schools to showcase their advocacy skills in class action law.
"Class actions are a significant and still expanding practice area in Canadian law, with an impact across the country," said Dana Peebles, a partner in McCarthy Tétrault’s Litigation group and Chair of the firm’s National Class Actions Committee. "The goal of this moot is to develop, promote and encourage excellence in advocacy. We are proud to provide a platform for law students to demonstrate their practical legal skills in this fascinating area of law. The Winkler Class Actions Moot is part of our overall commitment as a firm is to help students develop their full potential as advocates."
The Winkler Class Actions Moot brought together a high-profile panel of judges including class action defence lawyers from McCarthy Tétrault, class action plaintiff lawyers from Koskie Minsky LLP and Siskinds LLP, and in-house counsel from CIBC and TD. The final round was judged by Chief Justice Warren Winkler, Justice Paul Perell, and McCarthy Tétrault partner Caroline Zayid.
McGill University was named the winning team and received the honour of being the first to capture the Winkler Class Actions Moot cup.
