McCarthy Tétrault lawyers publish new edition of Canadian and International Copyright Law Casebook
Toronto, September 16, 2013 — McCarthy Tétrault is pleased to announce that partners Barry Sookman and Steven Mason, alongside Carys Craig, Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, have released the second edition of Copyright: Cases and Commentary on the Canadian and International Law, published by Carswell.
With the shift toward an information economy and the rapid development of digital technologies, copyright is becoming one of the most dynamic and controversial areas of Canadian law and policy. The second edition will be of particular interest to authors of musical, literary, dramatic and artistic works as the casebook presents extracts from leading cases from both Canadian and international jurisprudence to illustrate the legal concepts, doctrinal evolution and current approaches to copyright issues. The edition reflects important case law and statutory amendments including the "copyright pentalogy" and the Copyright Modernization Act.
Mr. Sookman and Mr. Mason are both well-known for their expertise in IP law, with experience appearing before all types of IP regulatory bodies and all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
Mr. Sookman is a partner and former co-leader of the firm’s Technology Law Group, and the former head of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. He is recognized as one of Canada’s foremost authorities in information technology, intellectual property, e-commerce, Internet and privacy law. Mr. Sookman acts in connection with complex IT/IP transactions such as outsourcings and in complex IT/IP litigation.
Mr. Mason is one of McCarthy Tétrault’s most experienced trial and appellate lawyers. He focuses his practice on IP and related disputes, and has been lead counsel in many cases involving patent, trademark, copyright and trade secrets. He also advises clients on validity and infringement, and appears regularly before the Patent Appeals Board, Copyright Board and Patented Medicines Prices Review Board. Mr. Mason is a member of the Ontario bar and the State Bar of California.
