McCarthy Tétrault lawyers receive IPEBLA Tony Thurnham Award

Toronto, May 27, 2013 — McCarthy Tétrault is delighted to announce that at the International Pension & Employee Benefits Lawyers Association’s (IPEBLA) conference in Rome last night, its lawyers Greg Winfield and Mark Firman received the 2013 Tony Thurnham Award in recognition of their article, "Canadian Employee Life and Health Trusts."
Published in IPEBLA’s journal, International Pension Lawyer Journal, the article provides a practical overview of a new type of trust available under the Income Tax Act (Canada), through which employers can fund certain group health and life insurance benefits. Named after a founding member of IPEBLA and awarded biennially, the Tony Thurnham Award is presented to the author or authors of the best article published during the during the two-year period.
Mr. Winfield is counsel in McCarthy Tétrault’s Pensions, Benefits & Executive Compensation Group, was the Canadian contributor to the seminal 2005 UNEP report on ESG investing and acted in respect of the establishment of the first Employee Life and Health Trust in Canada. He acts on pension investment matters for the largest pension plans in Canada, and has particular expertise in dealing with public sector pension plans, including in the structuring of investments and debt offerings.
Mr. Firman is an associate in McCarthy Tétrault’s Pensions, Benefits & Executive Compensation Group. He advises on all aspects of pensions, benefits and executive compensation, including, of course, employee life and health trusts. He has previously been published in Benefits Canada, International Pension Lawyer, Taxation of Executive Compensation and Retirement, and the University of Toronto Faculty of Law Review.
