Matthew D. Peters
Toronto, November 26, 2010 — Last night, Lexpert honoured two McCarthy Tétrault Regional Managing Partners, Matthew Peters and Kim Thomassin, with Rising Stars Awards at a gala in Toronto. Each year, Lexpert bestows Rising Stars Awards upon Canada’s leading lawyers under the age of 40 from law firms and in-house legal departments. Winners are nominated by colleagues and chosen by an independent selection committee.
"I am delighted to congratulate Kim and Matthew on this richly deserved recognition," said Marc-André Blanchard, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of McCarthy Tétrault LLP. "They are both extremely talented professionals who are passionate about providing the highest level of service to our clients. As Regional Managing Partners, they are also committed leaders who inspire their colleagues and contribute significantly to the ongoing success of our firm."
Mr. Peters is the Regional Managing Partner, British Columbia, and a Partner in the Technology Group in Vancouver. His practice is broadly based in the areas of financings, mergers and acquisitions, outsourcing, alliances and technology distribution, with a specific emphasis on complex commercial transactions. Highly active in both industry and community organizations, Mr. Peters is currently a board member of DigiBC and the Vancouver Enterprise Forum. He regularly lectures at programs and conferences on topics ranging from outsourcing, privacy, mergers and acquisitions and start-up issues.
"I am extremely grateful to Lexpert for this award, and thank each and everyone at McCarthy Tétrault for helping me achieve this honour," said Mr. Peters. "Working at the firm, I have received tremendous support and guidance from some of the most talented lawyers in the industry, and had the privilege of working with inspiring clients."
Ms. Thomassin is the Managing Partner for the Québec Region. A member of McCarthy Tétrault’s national leadership team since 2008, she is one of very few women in the legal sector to occupy such a position within a major national law firm while continuing full-time practice. Ms. Thomassin’s practice focuses mainly on project financing in the areas of energy and infrastructure, acquisition and financing and commercial transactions.
"This award is an honour, one that I share with my outstanding clients and fellow lawyers at the firm," said Ms. Thomassin. "I truly believe that the environment created at McCarthy Tétrault is unparalleled; it allows young lawyers to build challenging and rewarding careers, and to contribute directly to our firm’s growth and our clients’ successes."
Ms. Thomassin is a recognized leader in her field, regularly delivering university lectures and speaking at conferences for organizations such as Insight, Canadian Institute, CanWEA (Canadian Wind Energy Association) and Energy Forum. Popular with specialized media for her expertise, Ms. Thomassin has authored numerous articles on renewable energy, infrastructure, project finance and public-private partnerships (PPP) for both Canadian and US publications.
