McCarthy Tétrault Lawyers Among WXN’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women
Toronto, November 30, 2009 — McCarthy Tétrault partners Barbara Boake and Gabrielle Richards are recipients of the prestigious Women’s Executive Network’s (WXN) 2009 Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Awards, which will be presented at a gala event tonight in Toronto.
The WXN Top 100 awards honour women who are proven achievers in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors in eight different categories. Ms. Boake and Ms. Richards won in the "Professionals" category, which recognizes women professionals in practice who play a leadership role within their organizations. Winners are recognized for their management abilities, vision and leadership, corporate performance, and community service.
Barbara J. Boake is a partner in the Bankruptcy and Restructuring Group in Toronto and, as National Leader, Professionals, she is a member of McCarthy Tétrault’s Senior Leadership Team — the first woman to serve on this four-person executive team. In this role, Ms. Boake sets strategy and policy for the firm’s lawyers across the country. She has also served on the firm’s Board of Partners.
"McCarthy Tétrault's national platform and culture was instrumental in helping me achieve this honour. We have an environment where our people can reach their full potential," said Ms. Boake. "I’ve had the opportunity to do challenging work for major clients, develop strategies to support and develop our professionals, and contribute to the firm’s growth and success."
Ms. Boake is listed in the 2007 edition of Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business as a leading lawyer in the area of restructuring and insolvency, and she was named one of the top 40 international restructuring professionals under 40 by the Global Insolvency and Restructuring Review. In addition to her legal work, she has acted as a senior advisor to Ontario’s Minister of Finance.
Gabrielle Richards is a partner in the Toronto office, a former member of McCarthy Tétrault’s Board of Partners, and a former National Practice Group Leader for the Tax Group. Her practice focuses on the tax implications of mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations and corporate finance, as well as other general taxation matters.
"I am thrilled that the WXN has chosen to honour me with this award," said Ms. Richards. McCarthy Tétrault has given me what every professional needs to succeed — encouragement to be my best. I have always been supported by my colleagues, challenged to find the best solutions for every client, and given the opportunity to contribute to the firm’s leadership."
Ms. Richards has achieved considerable recognition from her peers. Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business has acknowledged her tax law expertise in its 2007-2010 editions, and The LEXPERT/The American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada has touted her accomplishments in the area of corporate tax each year since 2007. She was recognized as one of Canada's top 25 women lawyers by Lexpert and is listed in Legal Media Group’s current Guide to the World's Leading Tax Advisers.
"I congratulate the WXN for its commitment to recognizing women like Barbara and Gabrielle who reach the highest levels in their professions," said W. Iain Scott, Chair and CEO of McCarthy Tétrault. "One of the reasons McCarthy Tétrault has earned a place among Canada’s pre-eminent law firms is our dedication to creating opportunities for professional growth — this is critical if we want to provide exceptional expertise and service to our clients. Barbara and Gabrielle are testaments to this dedication, and they are outstanding role models for everyone at McCarthy Tétrault."
