Pre-Eminent Litigator Neil Finkelstein Joins McCarthy Tétrault

Toronto, May 26, 2009 — McCarthy Tétrault is pleased to announce that Neil Finkelstein will be joining the firm as a partner in the Litigation Group in the Toronto office, effective June 1st. Mr. Finkelstein brings a wealth of experience as lead counsel in numerous significant Canadian competition, securities, constitutional, pension, commercial and tax cases at every level of court.

Neil is a pre-eminent litigator with a broad practice, from takeover bids to regulatory litigation. Mr. Finkelstein has an impressive track record as counsel in trials and hearings in courts and administrative tribunals across Canada. He regularly appears in Canada’s appellate courts and has been counsel in 23 appeals in the Supreme Court of Canada. He has acted successfully as counsel in five of the six contested merger cases decided under the Competition Act and as counsel in some of Canada’s most important hostile takeover battles. Mr. Finkelstein represented the Government of Newfoundland on the Meech Lake Accord and the Charlottetown Accord. As well, he was co-counsel to the Gomery Commission into Sponsorships and Advertising by the Government of Canada in 2004-05.

The 2009 edition of Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business recognizes him as a top practitioner for both litigation and competition litigation in Canada.

Mr. Finkelstein is a life bencher of The Law Society of Upper Canada, a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and an honorary member of COMBAR (UK). He became an advocacy advisor to the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute in January 2007.

Mr. Finkelstein earned his BA degree from McGill University in 1973 and his CA in 1975. He received his LLB from McGill University in 1979 and his LLM from Harvard Law School in 1980. He was Law Clerk to the Right Honourable Bora Laskin, Chief Justice of Canada in 1980-81 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1982.
