McCarthy Tétrault Tops 2007 League Tables
Highest dollar value of completed deals for the year
January 21, 2008
Toronto, January 21, 2008 — McCarthy Tétrault ranked number one in the 2007 Canadian M&A league tables for the highest value of completed deals. The firm advised on M&A transactions worth over $94.4 US billion, nearly $20 billion more than its closest competitor.
The firm also had the third-highest number of completed and announced deals in 2007, having acted on a total of 115 mergers and acquisitions. These and other results were recently reported in Thomson Financial’s year-end Canadian mergers and acquisition league tables.
"McCarthy Tétrault is proud to be recognized, year after year, as a top M&A advisor," said David Woollcombe, Co-Practice Leader of McCarthy Tétrault’s Business Law Group. "M&A activity reached a fevered pitch in 2007, and we are pleased to have had key advisory roles on so many of our clients’ important transactions.
"The M&A landscape is different in 2008, principally due to more challenging credit markets, but we still see both strategic and private equity buyers looking at Canadian opportunities. We expect that the pace of M&A activity will slow in 2008, but that there will be significant transactions in the financial services, energy, natural resources, technology and telecommunications sectors, areas in which we have recognized depth and expertise."
McCarthy Tétrault has wide-ranging involvement in M&A deals —advising sellers, buyers, financial advisors and lenders on all manner of corporate, tax, competition and regulatory issues. Of particular note is the firm’s work on the largest completed deal in 2007 — the $38.1-US billion acquisition of Alcan by Rio Tinto, a longstanding client of McCarthy Tétrault.
