Toronto, May 4, 2006 — Mark J. Freiman, senior litigation partner at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, was appointed today as Commission Counsel for the independent public inquiry into the investigation of the bombing of Air India Flight 182, the worst mass murder in Canadian history. Mr. Freiman, who served as Deputy Attorney General of Ontario from 2000 to 2004, was selected as Commission Counsel by retired Supreme Court Justice John Major, Commissioner of the Inquiry.

Officially announced earlier this week by the Prime Minister, the Inquiry will investigate how Canadian authorities reacted to threats before the bombing, why they were unable to prevent the bombing, how law enforcement agencies interacted, and how Canada can deal more effectively with the threat of terrorism in the 21st century.

"I am extremely flattered and in no small measure humbled by the trust Commissioner Major is placing in me as his counsel," said Mr. Freiman, who heads McCarthy Tétrault’s National Public Law Group. "I am keenly aware of the importance to the public and to the families of the victims of the challenging issues that have been referred to the Inquiry. I look forward to working with the Commissioner as he addresses them."

Mr. Freiman has appeared as lead counsel at all levels of court on a broad range of important cases. Before serving as Deputy Attorney General of Ontario, he was Law Clerk to the former Chief Justice of Canada, Brian Dickson, and Senior Policy Advisor to former Attorney General of Ontario, Ian G. Scott, Q.C. In addition to his legal and public policy background, Mr. Freiman holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Modern Thought and Literature.

"McCarthy Tétrault has a long and rich history of public service," said W. Iain Scott, Chair and CEO of the firm. "Mark is one of a small number of litigators in Canada who practise public law with the confidence of the bench, bar and government."

McCarthy Tétrault is recognized as one of Canada’s oldest and most respected law firms.
