McCarthy Tétrault Partners Recognized in Highly Competitive 2004 Best of the Best Guide
Toronto, August 6, 2004 – The sixth edition of Euromoney Legal Media Group’s Best of the Best guide recognizes two McCarthy Tétrault lawyers among the world’s best. Yves Bériault is identified as a top lawyer in competition and Barry Sookman in technology, media and telecom law. In addition, Mr. Sookman is the only Canadian lawyer to be listed for information technology law.
"Mr. Bériault and Mr. Sookman are innovators in their areas of practice, and our clients are consistently impressed with the level of service they provide," said McCarthy Tétrault Chair and Chief Executive Officer W. Iain Scott. "We are very pleased that they have been recognized in the Best of the Best."
Results for the guide are based on independent surveys of more than 4,000 leading figures in 90 jurisdictions and nominations are valid only when received from outside the nominee’s firm. This research is then reviewed by a group of advisers from leading financial centres worldwide to determine the Best of the Best.
"The Best of the Best is a benchmark for excellence in the legal profession," said Matthew Lakin, the guide's Business Manager. "Since we began publishing the guide, McCarthy Tétrault has received an exceptional amount of recognition in our international surveys."
Project Manager Lee Harrison, who oversees several of Euromoney's guides, added: "The Best of the Best provides access to the most elite practitioners in specific areas of law. Year after year, McCarthy Tétrault is top ranked and its practitioners are recognized for their extensive expertise."
Mr. Bériault, the chair of McCarthy Tétrault’s Competition Group, has been involved in numerous landmark cases before all levels of the courts and the Competition Tribunal. He is a frequent guest speaker at international conferences and co-authored the acclaimed Le droit de la concurrence au Canada (Carswell, 1999). He advises a wide range of national and international clients on all aspects of competition law, including litigation.
Mr. Sookman, one of Canada’s foremost authorities on information technology law, is chair of the firm’s Internet and Electronic Commerce Group. He is also ranked by Lexpert as a most frequently recommended lawyer for information technology law. He regularly acts on technology transactions and has been involved as counsel in some of Canada's leading copyright, internet and other IT litigation. He is also a frequent writer and speaker on IT law and the author of the Canadian 4 volume collection Sookman: Computer, Internet and Electronic Commerce Law (Carswell, 1999 to 2004).
McCarthy Tétrault, Canada's premier law firm, has a significant presence in all major financial centres in Canada as well as in New York and London, UK. With close to 800 practitioners, the firm regularly advises on many of the largest transactions and cases in Canada and around the world. Authoritative legal directories such as Chambers Global, Euromoney’s International Financial Law Review and Lexpert’s Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada consistently rank the firm with top ratings in various practice areas. McCarthy Tétrault is the top-ranked legal advisor on Canadian completed mergers and acquisitions for 2003, according to Thomson Financial’s international league tables and listed as Top M&A Shop in Canada by the Financial Post.
