A passionate advocate, a strategic thinker and a pragmatic problem solver – Deron delivers successful business outcomes to today’s complex pension and employee benefit problems.

Deron Waldock is a partner in our National Pensions, Benefits & Executive Compensation Group in Toronto. His practice relates exclusively to pensions, benefits and compensation plans and their related investment arrangements. He advises both private and public sector clients on the legal and regulatory aspects of pension and employee benefits plans including: governance, fiduciary responsibilities, plan administration and compliance, pension fund investment, pension committees, plan wind up, surplus strategies, and the negotiation and drafting of plan and trust documents. His clients include universities, municipal bodies, governmental agencies, multinational corporations and jointly-trusteed and multi-employer pension plans.

Deron deals extensively with pension and benefits issues arising in corporate mergers, acquisitions and reorganizations, and has advised on many large Canadian and international transactions. Deron regularly advises on pension litigation matters, and has appeared before the Financial Services Tribunal in Ontario as well as made submissions to federal and provincial regulators on various pension compliance and surplus matters.

With more than 25 years’ experience in connection with the design, administration, operation and compliance of pension plans, Clients count on Deron to deliver results and find creative approaches to their pensions and benefits challenges and deliver results. He is noted in particular for his enthusiastic creativity in devising common sense solutions to complex challenges by cutting through the complexity to see the heart of the issue. His approach is pragmatic, creative, and includes a good dose of common sense.

Deron understands that to provide the best advice, he needs to understand your business, your appetite for risk, and how you measure success. Having previously led the legal consulting and compliance practice at a major consulting firm, Deron has developed a solution-focused approach that makes him a reassuring presence for the clients and also a pleasure to deal with.

Deron has written and spoken at numerous industry conferences in virtually all areas of pension law, including obligations of administrators and other fiduciaries, governance, communication and legal liability, mergers and acquisitions, insolvencies, investments, executive pensions and risk management. Prior to joining McCarthy Tétrault, he was Canadian Practice Leader, Legal Consulting & Compliance at a major international consulting firm, having been previously a partner in the Pension and Employee Benefit Group of another national law firm.

Past chair of both the Canadian Pension and Benefits Institute Ontario Region and the pensions and benefits executive of the Ontario Bar Association, Deron was also a member of the FSCO Legal Advisory Committee. Currently, Deron is a guest lecturer at Osgoode Hall Law School and he is a member of the CD Howe Pension Policy Committee. 

In addition to his legal work, Deron is a member of the Board of Governors and is Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee of St. Jerome’s University (a liberal arts university associated with the University of Waterloo. Deron received his BA from the University of Waterloo in 1989 and his LLB from Western University in 1992. He is called to the Ontario and Alberta bars.
