Emily MacKinnon is an associate in our Litigation Group in Vancouver. Her broad litigation practice encompasses high-level regulatory and commercial disputes as well as public law matters. Ms. MacKinnon has appeared at all levels of court in British Columbia and at the Supreme Court of Canada. From 2012 to 2013, Ms. MacKinnon clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada for Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin.
Ms. MacKinnon has experience in complex commercial litigation including class actions, product liability actions, competition matters and shareholder disputes. She has handled regulatory matters engaging both quasi-criminal and civil liability. Ms. MacKinnon has also acted in a wide variety of appeals engaging issues ranging from tort law to constitutional law, taxation, and criminal law, and she has argued at the Supreme Court of Canada. Ms. MacKinnon maintains an active pro bono practice.
Ms. MacKinnon received her JD from the University of British Columbia in 2012, where she graduated as the gold medallist and as a Wesbrook Scholar. In 2014, Ms. MacKinnon was selected by UBC to receive the Young Alumnus Award, which recognizes “a young alumnus whose accomplishments are of such excellence that they provide inspiration and leadership to students and other young alumni.”
Ms. MacKinnon sits on the board of directors of the UBC Allard School of Law Alumni Association, and she supervises a bi-weekly legal aid clinic at Positive Living BC. She is a fixed-wing pilot, opera singer, and a member of the Canadian Forces communications reserve. Ms. MacKinnon speaks English, French, and Italian.
Ms. MacKinnon received her BMus in voice performance from the University of Ottawa in 2005 and her MA in ethnomusicology from UBC in 2008.
Ms. MacKinnon was called to the Ontario bar and the British Columbia bar in 2013.
