Michael Rosenberg is a partner in our Litigation Group in Toronto. He maintains a general litigation practice, with a particular focus on complex commercial disputes, class actions, criminal law and investigations.

Mr. Rosenberg has appeared before all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also made submissions to the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs. Prior to joining McCarthy Tétrault, he served as a Law Clerk to the Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.

Mr. Rosenberg received his law degree with honours standing from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law. He holds a master’s degree in development studies from the University of Cambridge, awarded with distinction, and an undergraduate degree in social studies from Harvard University, where he graduated with high honours and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honours society. Mr. Rosenberg was called to the Ontario and New York Bars in 2010.

In addition to his private practice, Mr. Rosenberg is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law, where he teaches class actions.  He is also a member of the planning committee for the Osgoode Class Actions Symposium, Canada's premiere class actions conference, and he served as a member of the Law Commission of Ontario's advisory committee on class action reform. Mr. Rosenberg recently led the class action modules of the 1st Inter-American Training Program on Civil Justice Reform in Santiago, Chile. This event was convened by the Justice Studies Centre of the Americas, an organ of the Organization of American States.

Mr. Rosenberg was awarded the 2009 Harvey T. Strosberg Prize in Class Actions Law in recognition of his research and writing in this field. Most recently, Mr. Rosenberg co-authored Class Actions in Canada, a text used in law schools across the country, and Defending Class Actions in Canada, a leading practical resource.

Mr. Rosenberg also serves as the director of McCarthy Tétrault’s initiative to provide pro bono representation on criminal trials and appeals in partnership with the University of Toronto’s Downtown Legal Services legal aid clinic. Mr. Rosenberg’s writing on matters of criminal law has appeared in the National Post.
