Biography

Mathieu Dubord is a partner in McCarthy Tétrault’s Financial Services Group in Montréal. Mr. Dubord’s practice focuses on banking, financing and project development, particularly in the areas of acquisition financings, project and infrastructure finance, public-private partnerships, equipment finance and the regulation of financial institutions, including the application of consumer protection and cost of borrowing legislation. Mr. Dubord regularly advises lenders, borrowers and developers, in the development and financing of projects in the infrastructure, industrial and energy sectors.

Recent projects include:

  • advising the lenders to the successful bidder for the Hydro-Québec Data Centre Project;
  • advising the lenders to a bidder for the Champlain Bridge Replacement Project;
  • advising the lenders to a bidder for the Baie-Saint-Paul Hospital Project;
  • advising the lenders to a bidder for the AMT Pointe St-Charles Maintenance Centre Project;
  • advising the lenders to a bidder for the Miramichi Pay Centre Project;
  • advising the purchaser in connection with the acquisition of a 100% interest in the Montréal Symphony Concert Hall Project;
  • advising the developer in connection with a $610 million financing of a new generation cement plant in the Gaspé region;
  • advising a bidder for the Surrey Biofuel Processing Facility Project;
  • advising the lenders to a bidder for the Hawkesbury & District General Hospital Redevelopment Project;
  • advising the lenders to the successful bidder for the Sorel-Tracy Detention Center Project;
  • advising the lenders to a bidder for the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sainte-Justine Project;
  • advising the lenders to a bidder for the Place Bell Project;
  • advising the lenders to a bidder for the AMT Lachine Maintenance Centre Project;
  • advising the promoters in connection with a $725 million financing of two wind farm projects totalling more than 270 MW of installed capacity — winner of the 2011 North American Deal of the Year by Project Finance and the 2011 American Renewables Deal of the Year at the 2011 Project Finance International (PFI) Awards;
  • advising the lenders to the successful bidder for the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal Project;
  • advising the successful bidder for the McGill University Hospital Centre, Glen Campus Project — winner of Project Finance International’s 2010 Award for Deal of the Year (Americas) and the 2010 Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships’ Gold Award for Project Financing;
  • advising the lenders to a bidder for the Montréal Symphony Concert Hall Project;
  • advising the lenders to a post-secondary education institution in connection with a $140 million project financing.

Recent corporate finance transactions include:

  • advising the lending syndicate in connection with the $100 million financing of a mining royalty and exploration company;
  • advising the lenders in connection with the $90 million financing of a global company in the fields of horticulture and agriculture, industrial equipment, and environmental technologies;
  • advising the lending syndicate in connection with the $800 million financing of a leading cable operator;
  • advising a holding company in connection with a $1.1 billion financing;
  • advising the lenders in connection with the $65 million financing of a leading Canadian yogurt maker;
  • advising a world leading provider of marine cargo handling and delivery services in connection with a $175 million financing;
  • advising the lending syndicate in connection with the $70 million asset-based financing of a leading Canadian specialty retailer and manufacturer of fashion apparel;
  • advising the lending syndicate in connection with the US$110 million and $25 million financing of a leading independent supplier of petroleum products;
  • advising a leading North American automotive product distributor in connection with a US$400 million cross-border acquisition financing; and
  • advising a leading helicopter transportation services company in connection with a $125 million cross-border acquisition financing.

Mr. Dubord appears in the most recent edition of the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as a leading lawyer in the areas of banking and financial institutions, asset Equipment finance/leasing, infrastructure law and project finance. As well, he is named as a leading infrastructure lawyer in Lexpert’s most recent Special Edition. He is also recommended in Lexpert/ALM's 2015 Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, in the area project finance.

Mr. Dubord is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and he also sits on the boards of directors of the Institut pour le partenariat public-privé du Québec and of Productions Totem Contemporain. He received his LLB from the Université de Montréal in 2002 and was called to the Québec bar in 2003.
