Philippe H. Bélanger is a partner in our Bankruptcy & Restructuring Group in Montréal.
Mr. Bélanger’s practice focuses on bankruptcy, restructuring and commercial litigation. He frequently represents secured lenders and borrowers in major restructurings and insolvencies.
Recently Mr. Bélanger acted on behalf of BCE Inc. in BCI’s tax loss monetization, for the CN Railway Company in the restructuring of 360 Networks Inc., and for the National Bank of Canada in the restructuring of Piscines Trevis Inc. He was also retained by the Canadian Government to review and comment on legislative amendments to the Canadian insolvency regime and has appeared before Senate and House of Commons committees on behalf of the Insolvency Institute of Canada.
Mr. Bélanger worked as a clerk to Chief Justice Antonio Lamer at the Supreme Court of Canada in 1989 and 1990. Subsequently, he received his master’s degree in philosophy of law at Oxford University. A previous lecturer in Advanced Security Law and Advanced Bankruptcy and Restructuring Law at the Faculty of Law of Université de Montréal, he has given numerous conferences and has published texts in the field of insolvency and creditors' rights, namely on the topics of Crown rights and recourses collective agreements and bankruptcy and lender environmental liability. Mr. Bélanger has been a member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada since 2001.
Philippe is listed in the last edition of the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada, as a leading lawyer in insolvency and financial restructuring law, corporate and commercial litigation and insolvency litigation. He was also listed in Lexpert's Canadian "Top 100 Cross-Border Litigators" (2005), "Top 100 Most Creative Lawyers" (2006), and as one of Canada's "Top 40 under 40" lawyers. He is also recommended in Lexpert/ALM's 2015 Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, in the area of insolvency and financial restructuring. He also appears as a leading lawyer in corporate and commercial litigation, in director and officer liability and in insolvency and financial restructuring in the last edition of Best Lawyers in Canada and Who’s Who Legal – Canada. Philippe is also recommended in Restructuring/Insolvency in the current editions of Chambers Global and Chambers Canada.
In 2007, Philippe was awarded the title Advocatus Emeritus by the Québec bar in recognition of his professional excellence, outstanding contribution to the profession, and exceptional outreach.
Philippe Bélanger obtained his diploma in social sciences from Collège Jean de Brébeuf in 1985 and his bachelor of law from the Université de Montréal in 1988. He obtained his Masters degree (BCL) from Oxford in 1991. He was called to the Québec bar in 1989.
