From refineries and pipelines to climate change and renewables, Cameron has been providing integrated and strategic solutions in the energy sector for over 20 years

Cameron Hughes is a partner in our Energy Group and our Oil & Gas Group with more than 20 years of experience working in the energy industry in Alberta. His practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, energy infrastructure, project finance and development, and joint ventures in the energy sector. He advises clients with respect to upstream, midstream and downstream issues, over-the-counter commodity trading, cross-border trading, energy derivatives, risk management, asset and payment securitization and credit issues.

Cameron is recognized by Chambers Global and Chambers Canada as a leading lawyer in the area of Energy: Oil and Gas (Transactional) and was previously recognized by Lexpert as one of Canada's Leading Lawyers under 40.

In addition to his oil and gas practice, Cameron is regarded as one of Alberta’s leading lawyers with respect to wholesale and retail electricity and natural gas markets. He is at the forefront of emerging law with respect to climate change, and advises clients with respect to wind farm projects, trading in renewable energy credits, emissions management and alternative energy resources such as landfill gas and biofuels.

Cameron’s practice extends beyond the office, acting as executive member of the National Environmental, Energy and Resources Law Section of the Canada Bar Association, board member of the Canada Committee of the International Energy Credit Association, and as member of both the Independent Power Producers and the Canadian Energy Law Foundation. He also sits as Chair of the Alberta Capacity Markets Working Group under the Contracts & Legal Education Committee of the International Energy Credit Association. In addition to his professional associations, Cameron is an active member in community organizations, including as board member for the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, and Vice Chair of the Board and Vice President of the Elbow Valley Community.

Prior to joining McCarthy Tétrault, Cameron was a partner at a global firm in Calgary where he led the Derivatives Practice Group, co-chaired the Recruitment Committee, chaired the Growth Committee and was a member of the Professional Development, Alumni and Stampede committees.

Highlights of Cameron’s recent experience include:

  • MIE Holdings Corp. and Can-China Global Resources Fund in their $722 million acquisition of the Canadian oil and gas and production business of CQ Partnership, a partnership of Centrica PLC and Qatar Petroleum
  • Enbridge International Inc. with respect to employment law matters for Enbridge's international operations in the U.K., France and Germany
  • Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan with respect to default, termination and liquidated damages provisions under the ISDA Master Agreement, and rights and remedies available to a non-defaulting party in the event of termination of the ISDA Master Agreement and associated confirmations for financial derivatives and hedging transactions
  • Enbridge International Inc. with respect to its investment (totaling CAD$1.76 billion by in-service date) with EnBW Energie Baden-Wűrttemberg, one of the largest energy supply companies in Germany and Europe, to develop a 497 MW Hohe See offshore wind farm in the North Sea
  • Nabors Industries Ltd. with respect to the acquisition of distressed midstream assets owned by Quicksilver Resources, in receivership, in the Fortune Creek Area of British Columbia
  • Enbridge Inc. with respect to its CAD$538 million acquisition of Tupper Main and Tupper West gas plants and associated sales gas pipelines in northeastern BC from the Canadian subsidiary of Murphy Oil Corporation, and associated long term Midstream Services Agreement for processing and transportation of Murphy's produced gas
  • National Bank of Canada as administrative agent and lenders in connection with the CA$75 million project financing for the 29.2 MW Bull Creek Wind Project in Alberta
  • Enbridge International Inc. with respect to its CAD$750 million acquisition of a 24.90% stake in the 400 MW Rampion offshore U.K., wind project, being constructed by E. ON Climate & Renewables UK Limited, a subsidiary of E. ON SE, one of the world’s largest utilities and leading developer of wind energy projects
  • Enbridge Inc.: Advising with respect to the agreement to transfer its Canadian liquids pipelines business held by Enbridge Pipelines Inc. and Enbridge Pipelines Athabasca Inc., and certain Canadian renewable energy assets, to a subsidiary of Enbridge Income Fund for consideration, including assumption of debt, valued at CAD$30.4 billion
  • Enhance Energy with respect to the CO2 Supply Contracts and the construction and operation of the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line
  • ENMAX Corporation with respect to a CAD$750 million Retail Electricity Services Agreement with The City of Calgary, incorporating green energy from the 80 MW Taber wind farm, the largest in Alberta, and the 63 MW Kettles Hill wind farm. The agreement includes the sale of Renewable Energy Certificates to satisfy the City's 100% green energy commitment
