Deborah is a partner in our Litigation Group in Toronto.
A skilled negotiator, Deborah obtains the best results through the appropriate combination of negotiation, mediation and arbitration depending on the challenges faced by her clients. Her practice is focused on complex corporate-commercial matters, class actions which include product liability, securities, occupier’s liability, and medical defence. Her practice emphasizes shareholder disputes, directors and officers liability, multi-faceted corporate litigation often associating the oppression remedy.
The hallmark of Deborah’s work is her partnerships with clients. She provides pragmatic advice and strategies to meet their challenges and capitalize on their opportunities.
With experience in the courts across Canada, Deborah has appeared in British Columbia, Manitoba, and Ontario as counsel. She has worked with clients and their associated counsel in many more provinces and cities across Canada, the United States and Europe. In Ontario, Deborah has appeared before the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Ontario Court of Appeal, and the Ontario Securities Commission where she acted as counsel for an extensive provincial public inquiry. She has acted as counsel in the U.S. for arbitration proceedings, as well as in Canada.
Deborah is recognized as a Litigation Star for Ontario in the area of general commercial securities in the current edition of Benchmark Canada: The Definitive Guide to Canada’s Leading Litigation Firms and Attorneys.
Actively engaged with pro bono work, Deborah received the Canadian Bar Association’s 2015 Young Lawyers Pro Bono Award recognizing her commitment. She often also contributes to Pro Bono Law Ontario to attract and reinforce community pro bono projects.
As the co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Subcommittee on International Litigation, she regularly contributes authored work on the subject. She also frequently presents in the U.S. at conferences on issues related to international litigation.
Deborah is currently also acting as President of the Board of Directors of Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke, a not-for-profit agency that empowers women and their children to live free from violence.
Deborah completed her BA with Honours at the University of Windsor. She received her LLB from the University of Ottawa and was called to the Ontario bar in 2006.
