Scott Chalmers is a partner in our Business Law Group in Toronto and leads our Construction Group. He is an experienced senior construction lawyer qualified in Texas, England and Wales, Australia, and is qualified as a foreign legal consultant in Ontario. His extensive global experience includes advising on some of the largest and most complex international infrastructure and construction projects in the world. He has been recognized in the International Who’s Who of Construction Lawyers and by Legal 500: Latin America for his knowledge in projects and energy.
Mr. Chalmers’ practice specialises in transactional construction work for owners, sponsors and lenders. In the past few years, he has advised on projects with an aggregate value approaching US$200 billion. He has drafted and advised upon all types of purpose-drafted and standard form construction contracts including EPC, EPCM, convertible lump sum, design/build and construct-only contracts, and a wide variety of consultancy, supply, O&M and related procurement, security and technology licensing documents. He co-authored the book FIDIC Contracts: Law and Practice (Informa, 2009), on the leading suite of international construction contracts.
Mr. Chalmers advises on projects from pre-contract negotiation through contract administration and post contract dispute resolution. He has in-depth experience on a wide array of projects globally in many industry sectors, including oil and gas, petrochemicals, LNG, power (nuclear, gas, coal, renewables), infrastructure, mining and metals, shipbuilding, and architecture.
Prior to commencing law practice, Mr. Chalmers practiced as an architect in Australia and Canada. He brings practical construction industry experience as a consultant, employer’s representative and contract administrator to his legal practice.
Mr. Chalmers received his Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the University of Manitoba, his Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) from the University of Newcastle in Australia, and his Bachelor of Legal Studies from Macquarie University in Australia.
