Jade Buchanan recognized for cyber/data expertise in Global Data Review’s 40 Under 40 list

Managing data-related risk and cybersecurity threats are top-of-mind issues for many businesses, especially in the remote working environment. McCarthy Tétrault partner Jade Buchanan has helped many clients navigate some of the largest cybersecurity incidents in Canadian history. Drawing on this experience, in a Q&A feature with Global Data Review as part of their 40 Under 40 list, Jade explores the cyber/data legal landscape with a look to future trends in the space.

The 40 Under 40 list recognizes the top 40 individuals under the age of 40 from around the world, who represent the “best of the upcoming generation of data lawyers.”

Jade, an innovative thinker by trade, tells Global Data Review that if he could change one data-related law, he would take a more holistic approach in support of his clients’ best interests.

“I’d reshape the entire legal approach to cybersecurity. To sum up in a few words, we need a framework for a joint industry and government response to cybercrime,” he says. “This might include incentives for information sharing, creating conditions where threat actors are starved of ransom payments, preventing fraud so data subjects are less likely to suffer harm and ensuring regulators have the expertise and resources to support good cybersecurity practices.”

Jade, based in the firm’s Vancouver office, has worked on several high-profile cybersecurity incidents in Canada and dozens of other incidents, including data breaches and ransomware attacks. His technology transaction experience includes drafting and negotiating a range of IT outsourcing, licensing, maintenance and support agreements. He has particular expertise negotiating large, cloud-based outsourcings and the acquisition of cybersecurity software and services.

With immense experience in privacy, data protection and cybersecurity and a track record in advising key sectors on critical issues in novel and complex areas of law, McCarthy Tétrault’s Cyber/Data Group can help you navigate the privacy and data landscape to leverage the value of data, develop responsible AI practices, protect your organization’s assets and cement customers’ and clients’ digital trust.

In determining its final 40 Under 40 list, Global Data Review analyzed hundreds of submissions from law firms asking for their “best and brightest,” including information about their case work, their practice and background.
